What Is a Breathing Cycle

One cycle is one pass through the phases you kept above zero. Add the seconds, then you have the length. Repeat that until the session clock runs out.

How it works

A cycle is the sequence the timer repeats: inhale, optional hold, exhale, optional hold after exhale. Disable a phase by setting it to 0 — it does not count. Box breathing at 4-4-4-4 is a 16-second cycle. Equal breathing at 4-4 is an 8-second cycle. Coherent breathing at 5-5 is a 10-second cycle, which is 6 breaths per minute. Breaths per minute is 60 divided by the cycle length. A session is that cycle repeating until the clock hits zero; leftover seconds do not make another cycle.

How to work it out

  1. Write down each phase you will actually breathe — skip anything you set to 0.
  2. Add those seconds. That sum is one cycle.
  3. Divide 60 by the cycle length to get breaths per minute, or open the breaths per minute calculator.

What is a breathing cycle?

One full pass through the phases in the pattern. For box breathing that is inhale, hold, exhale, hold. Then the timer starts the same sequence again.

How do you calculate cycle length?

Add the phase durations you kept above zero. Four seconds four times is 16 seconds. Two phases of five seconds is 10 seconds.

How do breaths per minute relate to a cycle?

Breaths per minute is 60 divided by the cycle length in seconds. A 10-second cycle is 6 breaths per minute. Use the breaths per minute calculator if you want the numbers without doing the division.

Does leftover session time count as a cycle?
