Box Breathing vs 4-7-8

Same idea — a timed cycle — with different holds and a different visual. Pick the pattern, then press Start.

How they differ

Box breathing uses four equal phases: inhale, hold, exhale, hold. The default is four seconds each (16-second cycle, 3.75 breaths per minute) with a marker that travels around a square. 4-7-8 uses three phases: inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8 (19-second cycle, about 3.16 breaths per minute) and a block visual with no second hold. Square breathing and four-square breathing mean the same equal four-sided pattern as box.

How to choose

  1. If you want equal sides and a square to follow, start box breathing.
  2. If you want a longer exhale and can sit with a seven-second hold, start 4-7-8 breathing.
  3. If the 4-7-8 hold is too much, shorten it on the custom timer, or try relaxation breathing (4-2-6) or extended exhale.
  4. For a darker evening 4-7-8 with a ten-minute default, open sleep breathing.

When people use them

People often reach for box breathing as a short structured reset, and 4-7-8 as a slower evening pattern. That is a preference, not a prescription. Neither timer treats anxiety, insomnia, or any medical condition. Check the numbers on the breaths per minute calculator or the session calculator if you want cycle math before you start.

Pattern data

  • Box breathing default: 4-4-4-4, cycle 16 seconds, 3.75 breaths per minute, 5-minute session ≈ 18 cycles.
  • 4-7-8 default: 4-7-8, cycle 19 seconds, ≈3.16 breaths per minute, 5-minute session ≈ 15 cycles.
  • Box has two holds; 4-7-8 has one hold and a longer exhale.

FAQ

Is box breathing the same as 4-7-8?

No. Box breathing is four equal phases. 4-7-8 is inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8, with no hold after the exhale.

Which pattern is slower?

At the defaults, 4-7-8 is a 19-second cycle (about 3.16 breaths per minute). Box 4-4-4-4 is 16 seconds (3.75 breaths per minute).

Can I try both?

Yes. Open the box breathing timer or the 4-7-8 timer. Each page starts the same engine with a different sequence.

Does either treat anxiety or help you sleep?

These pages are timers, not treatment. breathinglab.app does not provide medical advice.

Stop and return to normal breathing if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or uncomfortable. The 4-7-8 hold is longer than many everyday breaths and is optional.
