How it works

Box breathing divides each breathing cycle into four equal phases: inhale, hold, exhale and hold. A common configuration uses four seconds for each phase. The marker travels one side of the square per phase; one lap is one cycle. Square breathing and four-square breathing use the same 4-4-4-4 pattern. For a shorter equal-phase reset with a block visual, try 2-minute focus breathing. Want the long-exhale alternative? See box breathing vs 4-7-8.

How to do it

  1. Sit or stand somewhere you can breathe through your nose if that is comfortable.
  2. Follow the marker around the square: inhale on the top, hold on the right, exhale on the bottom, hold on the left.
  3. Keep each side the same length. The default is four seconds per side.
  4. If a hold feels like too much, stop and return to normal breathing, or open the custom timer and shorten the holds.

Session duration

The default session is five minutes — about eighteen full cycles at 4-4-4-4. Use one or two minutes for a quick reset, or ten minutes when you want a longer practice. Change the duration before you press Start.

When people use it

People often use box breathing as a short, structured reset before a meeting, after a stressful moment, or between tasks. It is a timer with equal sides, not a medical treatment. Prefer a longer evening pattern? See 4-7-8 breathing or sleep breathing. Check cycle math on the breaths per minute calculator.

FAQ

What is box breathing?

Box breathing is a four-phase pattern with equal inhale, hold, exhale, and hold. The default on this page is four seconds per phase (4-4-4-4).

Is square breathing the same as box breathing?

Yes. Square breathing and four-square breathing usually mean the same equal four-sided pattern this timer uses.

How long should a box breathing session be?

Five minutes is a common default. Shorter sessions work for a quick reset; longer sessions are fine if the holds stay comfortable.

Is this medical advice?

No. breathinglab.app provides informational breathing tools and does not provide medical advice.
