How it works
A session is a repeating cycle until the clock runs out. Cycles in a session is the session length divided by the cycle length, rounded down. Leftover seconds do not complete another cycle. Totals multiply per-cycle inhale, exhale, and hold time by that cycle count. A five-minute box breathing session (4-4-4-4) is 18 cycles, 12 leftover seconds, 72 seconds of inhale, 72 of exhale, and 144 of holds.
How to do it
- Choose a preset or enter phase times. Set a phase to 0 to turn it off.
- Pick a session length. The defaults match the timers: 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 minutes.
- Read cycles, leftover seconds, and inhale / exhale / hold totals.
- Start this pattern to breathe with the same counts on a timer.
When people use it
Use this when you care how a pattern fills a block of time — not only breaths per minute. For the rate itself, open the breaths per minute calculator. Prefer to skip the math and start? Open box breathing or the custom timer.
Pattern data
- Box 4-4-4-4 for 5 minutes: 18 cycles, 12 leftover seconds, 72 sec inhale, 72 sec exhale, 144 sec hold.
- 4-7-8 for 5 minutes: cycle 19 seconds, 15 cycles, 15 leftover seconds, 60 sec inhale, 120 sec exhale, 105 sec hold.
- Coherent 5-5 for 5 minutes: 30 cycles, 150 sec inhale, 150 sec exhale, 0 leftover seconds.
- Equal 4-4 for 2 minutes: 15 cycles, 60 sec inhale, 60 sec exhale.
FAQ
Why is there leftover time?
Sessions end on the clock, not always on a finished cycle. Five minutes is 300 seconds. A 16-second box cycle fits 18 times (288 seconds), leaving 12 seconds.
Do inhale totals include a second small inhale?
Yes. A physiological sigh counts both inhales toward inhale time. This calculator’s four fields fold extra inhales into the inhale slot.
Can I start the timer from here?
Yes. Start this pattern opens a matching technique or the custom breathing timer.
Is this medical advice?
No. breathinglab.app provides informational breathing tools and does not provide medical advice.
Stop and return to normal breathing if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or uncomfortable. Long holds are optional.
