How it works

Extended exhale breathing keeps the inhale shorter than the exhale. The default is four seconds in and six seconds out. Presets 4:6, 4:8, and 5:7 change that ratio without adding holds. Prefer a short hold plus long exhale? See relaxation breathing. Prefer the classic long hold? See 4-7-8 breathing.

How to do it

  1. Choose a preset if you want a longer or shorter exhale.
  2. Inhale for the first number of seconds.
  3. Exhale for the second, longer number.
  4. There is no hold. Leave if the exhale feels forced.

Session duration

The default session is five minutes. Two or three minutes is enough to feel the longer exhale; ten minutes suits a slower wind-down.

When people use it

People often use a longer exhale as a slower, settling rhythm after a busy stretch of the day. It is a timer, not a treatment for stress.
